How to Tell If Your Marketing Is Actually Working: A 15-Minute Self-Check

Is Your Marketing Actually Working, Sheehy Marketing blog header

Most business owners can’t tell you if their marketing is working. They can tell you it’s busy. Posts are going out. The agency sends a report. The website looks fine.

Busy is not the same as working.

Here’s a 15-minute check. Answer these honestly and you’ll know more about your marketing than most owners know about theirs.

Why this matters

You get what you reward. Reward activity and you get activity. Reports full of impressions, likes, and reach. Numbers that climb and change nothing.

Reward results and you get results. Leads, pipeline, revenue. The stuff that pays the bills.

The gap between those two is where most marketing budgets quietly disappear.

The 15-minute check

Set a timer. Answer out loud. If you have to guess, that guess is your answer.

1. Can you name your best channel?
Not your favorite. Your best. The one that brings in the most customers for the least money. If you can’t name it, you can’t feed it.

2. Do you know what one lead costs you?
Roughly is fine. If a lead costs $40 and a customer is worth $4,000, spend more. If you have no idea, you’re flying blind.

3. Can you follow one customer from first click to sale?
Pick a recent customer. Trace how they found you. If the trail goes cold halfway, your tracking has a hole in it.

4. Does your marketing match your sales?
The leads you generate should be leads your team can close. If sales keeps calling the leads junk, marketing and sales aren’t talking.

5. What did you stop doing this year?
Good marketing means saying no. If you’re still doing everything you did last year, nobody is making decisions. You’re just adding.

Score yourself

Answered four or five with real numbers? Your marketing is probably working. Double down on what’s winning.

Answered one or two? You don’t have a marketing problem. You have a measurement problem. And you can’t fix what you can’t see.

Answered none? You’re spending money on hope. That’s common. It’s also fixable.

What working actually looks like

It’s quiet. It’s a little boring. It’s a handful of channels that consistently bring in the right customers at a cost you can live with.

It is not a dashboard with 40 metrics. It is not being on every platform. It is not the newest tactic somebody posted about last week.

What works is knowing your numbers, backing your winners, and cutting the rest. That’s the whole game.

If that check stung a little
